SERVED WITH THE ARTILLERY BRANCH OF THE U.S. ARMY IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC. LIBERATED THE PHILIPPINES, 1944-1945, FULFILLING GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR'S PROMISE. WHILE SERVING ON LUZON ISLAND, HE CONTRACTED MALARIA AND FOUGHT A CONTINUOUS BATTLE WITH THAT DISEASE THE REST OF HIS LIFE.
