ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS AN ENLISTED MAN ON MARCH 12, 1942 AT SAINT LOUIS, MISSOURI. COMPLETED BOOT CAMP; ATTENDED SHIPS RADIO SCHOOL AT BOULDER, COLORADO AND ADVANCED RADIO SCHOOL AT MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE. ASSIGNED TO NAVAL AIR STATION ASTORIA, OREGON. VOLUNTEERED FOR AND COMPLETED MIDSHIPMAN SCHOOL AT NOTRE DAME UNIVERSITY AND COMMISSIONED ON MAY 31, 1944. THEREAFTER, ATTENDED MINE WARFARE SCHOOL AT YORKTOWN, VIRGINIA; ASSIGNED TO THE MOTOR MINESWEEPER YMS-144 AND EVENTUALLY BECAME COMMANDING OFFICER OF THAT SHIP. SERVED IN BOTH THE AMERICAN AND ASIATIC-PACIFIC THEATERS OF OPERATION. LAST OVERSEAS ASSIGNMENT WAS AS CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIR OFFICER WITH A UNIT AT NAVY LOCATION 3964, SAMAR, PHILIPPINE ISLANDS. RELEASED FROM ACTIVE DUTY AS A LIEUTENANT, JUNIOR GRADE, UNDER HONORABLE CONDITIONS ON JANUARY 9, 1946. EARNED THE AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, ASIATIC-PACIFIC CAMPAIGN MEDAL AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL.
