ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON JUNE 14, 1944 AT FORT SHERIDAN, ILLINOIS. COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING AND QUALIFIED IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY OF RIFLEMAN (745). DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. ON DECEMBER 9, 1944 BOUND FOR ENGLAND. ASSIGNED TO AND FOUGHT WITH COMPANY I, 329TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 83RD ‘THUNDERBOLT’ INFANTRY DIVISION IN ARDENNES CAMPAIGN. WOUNDED BY ENEMY ACTION ON JANUARY 9, 1945 IN LUXEMBOURG, BELGIUM. REMOVED FROM THE BATTLEFIELD FOR TREATMENT AND RETURNED TO THE U.S. ON APRIL 23, 1945 FOR CONVALESCENCE. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A PRIVATE WITH A CERTIFICATE OF DISABILITY ON JUNE 2, 1945 AT KENNEDY GENERAL HOSPITAL, MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE. EARNED THE PURPLE HEART MEDAL, COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE, AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 1 BRONZE BATTLE STAR AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL.
