ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON OCTOBER 28, 1942 AT CAMP GRANT, ILLINOIS. COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING, QUALIFIED IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY OF HEAVY MORTAR CREWMAN (1607) AND ASSIGNED TO COMPANY H, 381ST INFANTRY REGIMENT, 96TH ‘DEADEYE' INFANTRY DIVISION. DEPARTED THE U.S. WITH HIS UNIT ON JULY 26, 1944 BOUND FOR THE ASIATIC-PACIFIC THEATER OF OPERATIONS. AFTER FURTHER TRAINING IN HAWAII, ENTERED COMBAT IN THE SOUTHERN PHILIPPINE ISLANDS CAMPAIGN VIA AN ASSAULT LANDING IN LEYTE GULF AND AGAIN VIA AN ASSAULT LANDING AT OKINAWA IN THE RYUKYUS CAMPAIGN. EARNED THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL, COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE, GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, ASIATIC-PACIFIC CAMPAIGN RIBBON WITH BRONZE ARROWHEAD AND 2 BRONZE BATTLE STARS, WWII VICTORY MEDAL AND THE PHILIPPINE LIBERATION MEDAL WITH 1 BRONZE BATTLE STAR. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A STAFF SERGEANT ON JANUARY 10, 1946 AT THE SEPARATION CENTER, JEFFERSON BARRACKS, MISSOURI.
