DRAFTED AND ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS AN APPRENTICE SEAMAN ON OCTOBER 7, 1943 AT NAVAL RECEIVING STATION, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. COMPLETED BOOT CAMP AT NAVAL TRAINING STATION, FARRAGUT, IDAHO. ASSIGNED TO THE FLETCHER CLASS DESTROYER USS ROBINSON DD-562, WHICH WAS HEAVILY DAMAGED BY A KAMIKAZE ATTACK. EARNED THE COMBAT ACTION RIBBON (RETROACTIVELY AWARDED BY 1999 ACT OF CONGRESS), NAVY UNIT COMMENDATION, AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, ASIATIC-PACIFIC CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 7 BRONZE BATTLE STARS, WWII VICTORY MEDAL AND THE PHILIPPINE LIBERATION MEDAL WITH 2 BRONZE BATTLE STARS. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A STOREKEEPER THIRD CLASS ON MAY 2, 1946 AT THE SEPARATION CENTER, GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS.
