ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON JANUARY 21, 1942 AT CAMP GRANT, ILLINOIS. COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING, QUALIFIED IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY OF MASTER MECHANIC (342) AND ASSIGNED TO COMPANY C, 131ST ORDINANCE MAINTENANCE BATTALION, 9TH ARMORED DIVISION. DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. ON AUGUST 20, 1944 BOUND FOR CENTRAL EUROPE BEFORE ENTERING COMBAT ON AUGUST 26, 1944. THE 9TH ARMORED DIVISION WAS THE FIRST ALLIED FORCE TO CROSS THE RHINE IN GERMANY. EARNED THE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN THEATER MEDAL WITH FOUR BRONZE STARS AND THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A MASTER SERGEANT ON OCTOBER 14, 1945 AT THE SEPARATION CENTER, FORT SHERIDAN, ILLINOIS.
