On the USS Shaw DD-373 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. The ship was hit by a bomb and badly destroyed. Jumped into the water and swam to shore underwater and got out with shrapnel in leg. Handed a stretcher and started picking up wounded and dead comrades. Was assigned to the USS Conyngham DD-371, a destroyer, was also injured on it. Discharged in September 1945 from Farragut, Idaho. Deceased September 8, 1998.
