ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON DECEMBER 18, 1942 AT FORT SHERIDAN, ILLINOIS. SELECTED FOR THE SIGNAL CORPS, COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING, QUALIFIED IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY OF TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH LINEMAN (238) AND ASSIGNED TO COMPANY B, 35TH SIGNAL CONSTRUCTION BATTALION. DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. WITH HIS UNIT ON AUGUST 20, 1943, BOUND FOR THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS. PARTICIPATED IN THE ASSAULT LANDING OF THE NORMANDY INVASION AND FOUGHT ON THROUGH THE NORTHERN FRANCE, ARDENNES, RHINELAND AND CENTRAL EUROPE CAMPAIGNS. EARNED THE MERITORIOUS UNIT AWARD, GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH A BRONZE ARROWHEAD AND 1 SILVER BATTLE STAR, AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A PRIVATE FIRST CLASS ON NOVEMBER 30, 1945 AT THE SEPARATION CENTER, CAMP GRANT, ILLINOIS.
