ENLISTED AND ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS AN APPRENTICE SEAMAN ON JULY 8, 1944 AT SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS. COMPLETED BOOT CAMP AT NAVAL TRAINING STATION GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS AND FURTHER TRAINING AT NAVAL TRAINING SCHOOL (CARGO), NAVAL TRAINING AND DISTRIBUTION CENTER, CAMP PEARY, WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA AND AT THE SMALL CRAFT TRAINING CENTER, ROOSEVELT BASE, TERMINAL ISLAND, CALIFORNIA. ASSIGNED TO AND SERVED IN TURN ABOARD THE GILLIAM CLASS ATTACK TRANSPORT USS CORTLAND APA-75 AND THE HEAVY CRUISER USS BOSTON CA-69. EARNED THE AMPHIBIOUS INSIGNIA, AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, ASIATIC-PACIFIC CAMPAIGN MEDAL AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A SEAMAN FIRST CLASS ON MARCH 8, 1946 AT THE PERSONNEL SEPARATION CENTER, GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS.
