HE ENLISTED IN THE NAVY ON DECEMBER 9, 1941. TRAINED AT THE NAVAL TRAINING STATION IN NORFOLK, VIRGINIA. HE COMMANDED A 40MM GUN CREW ABOARD THE USS ALABAMA, WITH THE 3RD FLEET, TAKING PART IN INVASIONS OF THE MARSHALL AND MARIANA ISLANDS, INCLUDING TARAWA, IWO JIMA ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE BATTLES OF THE PHILIPPINE SEA AND LEYTE GULF AND RAIDS ON JAPANESE POSITIONS ELSEWHERE IN THE PACIFIC. THE ALABAMA WAS CREDITED WITH SHOOTING DOWN 22 JAPANESE PLANES. HE RECEIVED 8 BATTLE STARS AND 5 CAMPAIGN RIBBONS. DISCHARGED ON AUGUST 20, 1945.
