ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON JANUARY 6, 1943 AT CAMP GRANT, ILLINOIS. COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING AND QUALIFIED IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY OF SHEET METAL WORKER (201). DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. ON AUGUST 20, 1943 BOUND FOR THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS. PARTICIPATED IN THE NORMANDY AND NORTHERN FRANCE CAMPAIGNS WITH AN UNKNOWN UNIT AND WAS LATER TRANSFERRED TO COMPANY N, 253RD INFANTRY REGIMENT, 63RD INFANTRY DIVISION, WHICH SAW ACTION IN THE RHINELAND AND CENTRAL EUROPE CAMPAIGNS. EARNED THE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL AND EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 4 BRONZE BATTLE STARS. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A TECHNICIAN 3RD GRADE ON OCTOBER 2, 1945 AT THE SEPARATION CENTER, FORT SHERIDAN, ILLINOIS.
