DRAFTED INTO THE ARMY, SERVED IN THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS. HIS DIVISION WAS OVERRUN BY GERMANS DURING THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE. HE WAS CAPTURED DECEMBER 18, 1944, AND SPENT 4 1/2 MONTHS AS A PRISONER OF WAR. AFTER TWO UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPTS, ESCAPED ON A THIRD TRY. BADLY FROSTBITTEN DURING CAPTIVITY AND RECEIVED A MEDICAL DISCHARGE. AWARDED THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL AND THE PURPLE HEART.
