ASSIGNED TO COMPANY 'D', 1ST BATTALION, 334TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 84TH INFANTRY DIVISION. DURING THE FIGHTING IN EUROPE, THE DIVISION WAS AT DIFFERENT TIMES ASSIGNED TO THE SECOND BRITISH ARMY AND THE 1ST, 3RD AND 9TH U.S. ARMIES. KNOWN AS 'THE RAILSPLITTERS', AFTER FIERCE AND FEROCIOUS FIGHTING AT THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE, THEY WERE CALLED 'THE TERROR DIVISION' AND 'HATCHET DIVISION' BY THE GERMANS. HE WAS ASSIGNED DUTY AS A TRUCK DRIVER AND HAULED AMMUNITION AND OTHER SUPPLIES IN SUPPORT OF HIS DIVISION.
