AS A COMMISSIONED OFFICER ON THE USS WILLIAM D. PORTER DD-579, HIS SHIP SERVED IN THE ATLANTIC THEATER AND THEN IN MANY MAJOR CAMPAIGNS IN THE PACIFIC THEATER, UNTIL SHE WAS LOST WHILE ON RADAR PICKET DUTY TO A KAMIKAZE ATTACK ON JUNE 10TH 1945 DURING THE BATTLE FOR OKINAWA.
