ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON FEBRUARY 23, 1943 AT FORT SHERIDAN, ILLINOIS. COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING AND QUALIFIED IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY OF CANNONEER (610). ASSIGNED TO HEADQUARTERS COMPANY, 3RD BATTALION, 385TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 76TH ‘ONAWAY’ INFANTRY DIVISION. DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S ON NOVEMBER 23, 1944 WITH ADVANCE ELEMENTS OF HIS DIVISION BOUND FOR THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS. ENTERED COMBAT ON JANUARY 19, 1945 AND FOUGHT IN THE ARDENNES, RHINELAND, AND CENTRAL EUROPE CAMPAIGNS. EARNED THE COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE, GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 3 BRONZE BATTLE STARS, AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A PRIVATE FIRST CLASS ON NOVEMBER 16, 1945 AT THE SEPARATION CENTER, CAMP GRANT, ILLINOIS.
