ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON JUNE 4, 1942 AT CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. VOLUNTEERED FOR AND COMPLETED OFFICER CANDIDATE SCHOOL AT FORT BENNING, GEORGIA. UNIT OF ASSIGNMENT WAS 1ST COMPANY, 2ND STUDENT TRAINING REGIMENT, ISSC, FROM WHICH HE WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A CORPORAL ON JANUARY 3, 1943 TO ACCEPT APPOINTMENT AS A SECOND LIEUTENANT AND ACTIVE DUTY IN THE ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES. ENTERED THE ARMY AIR FORCE’S PILOT TRAINING PROGRAM THE NEXT DAY. ATTENDED PREFLIGHT TRAINING AT MAXWELL FIELD, GEORGIA; PRIMARY FLIGHT TRAINING AT AMERICUS, GEORGIA; BASIC FLIGHT TRAINING AT GREENWOOD, MISSISSIPPI; AND ADVANCED FLIGHT TRAINING AT COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI. AFTER WINNING HIS WINGS, ASSIGNED TO RANDOLPH FIELD, TEXAS, AND ATTENDED B-17 TRANSITION TRAINING AT LOCKBOURNE, OHIO. REASSIGNED TO AND SERVED WITH THE 2113TH ARMY AIR FORCE BASE UNIT (TWO-ENGINE ADVANCED PILOT SCHOOL) COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A FIRST LIEUTENANT ON DECEMBER 8, 1945 AT THE SEPARATION BASE, CHANUTE FIELD, ILLINOIS. EARNED THE AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL.
