HE WAS A LIEUTENANT IN THE 57TH COMBAT ENGINEERS IN THE PACIFIC. HIS UNIT BUILT A 300 FOOT BRIDGE ACROSS THE TOROKINA RIVER, NEAR BOUGAINVILLE, PHILIPPINE ISLANDS, IN MARCH 1944. AS THE FIRST SUPPLY TRUCKS CROSSED EACH 150 FOOT SPAN, THE HUGE MAHOGANY TREES THEY USED WOULD BOW FROM THE STRESS OF THE WEIGHT, BUT HELD SECURE, TO THE CHEERS OF HIS MEN.
