Enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 15, 1937. Assigned to Langley Field, Virginia with the 8th Pursuit Group, crew chief Pursuit Aircraft. Later in 1940, he was assigned to the 36th Pursuit Group, in August 1942 he was sent to Cadet Classification for flight training. Completed May 24, 1943, class 43E. Assigned to Randolph Field for Basic Flight Instructor Course. Assigned to Waco Army Air Force, Texas, Basic Flight Instructor. In 1950, assigned to the Berlin Airlift, Frankfort, Germany.
