Activity During WWII

Served as a member of 8in and 40mm gun crews on the Heavy Cruiser USS Wichita (CA-45) for 15 months in the Pacific Theater, seeing action in the 1st and 2nd Battles of the Philippine Islands, the 1st attack on Formosa and the bombardment and capture of Okinawa. He was on the Wichita when it sailed into Nagasaki harbor on September 11, 1945 and toured the city as a witness to the destruction the atomic bomb caused.
