SERVED AS A RADIO OPERATOR AND GUNNER. IN SECOND MISSION INTENDED TO TARGET MUNICH, GERMANY, HE AND THE REST OF THE CREW WERE SHOT DOWN OVER OCCUPIED FRANCE ON JULY 16, 1944. THE B-17, CALLED 'DENNY BOY', CRASH LANDED IN A FIELD NEAR FETERNES IN EASTERN FRANCE. ALL 9 CREW MEMBERS SURVIVED BUT WERE THEN SURROUNDED BY GERMAN PATROL. LATER RESCUED BY FRENCH LIBERATORS.
