Activity During WWII

After graduation in 1942, he was off to Baltimore, Maryland where he worked as a welder in the Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard building Liberty Ships. In August 1943 he received his draft notice and reported to Ft Benning for boot camp. Soon after he volunteered to become a paratrooper and received his Jump Wings in January 1944. He was assigned to the 13th Airborne Division, 515th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) at Camp MacKall, North Carolina until he was selected as a replacement in April 1944 and shipped abroad. He reported to the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion (PIB) and fought in Operation Dragoon during the invasion of Southern France (August-September 1944). In December 1944 the unit reported to Belgium where they experience numerous extensive engagements with German forces during the Battle of the Bulge near Sadzot. In February 1945 the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion was deactivated and he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. At the end of the war the unit was assigned to Berlin supporting the occupation. In December 1945 he returned stateside and separated from the Army.
