ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON JANUARY 26, 1944 AT FORT SHERIDAN, ILLINOIS. SELECTED FOR THE INFANTRY, COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING, AND QUALIFIED IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY OF RIFLEMAN (MOS 745). DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. ON AUGUST 17, 1944 BOUND FOR THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS. ASSIGNED TO AND FOUGHT WITH COMPANY F, 115TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 29TH ‘BLUE AND GRAY’ INFANTRY DIVISION, IN THE NORTHERN FRANCE, RHINELAND, AND CENTRAL EUROPE CAMPAIGNS. REPORTED MISSING IN ACTION FOR SEVERAL DAYS, BUT RETURNED TO HIS UNIT. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A SERGEANT ON OCTOBER 21, 1945 AT THE SEPARATION CENTER, FORT SHERIDAN. EARNED THE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE, EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 3 BRONZE BATTLE STARS, AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL.
