ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON JANUARY 4, 1944 AT FORT SHERIDAN, ILLINOIS. SELECTED FOR INFANTRY REPLACEMENT TRAINING, COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING, AND QUALIFIED IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY OF RIFLEMAN (MOS 745). DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. ON JULY 26, 1944 BOUND FOR THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS. ASSIGNED TO AND FOUGHT WITH COMPANY C, 359TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 90TH ‘ALAMO’ INFANTRY DIVISION IN THE NORMANDY AND NORTHERN FRANCE CAMPAIGNS. SERIOUSLY WOUNDED IN ACTION ON NOVEMBER 8, 1944 IN VICINITY OF METZ, FRANCE. REMOVED FROM THE BATTLEFIELD FOR IN-THEATER TREATMENT AND RETURNED TO THE U.S. FOR FURTHER TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION ON FEBRUARY 16, 1945. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A PRIVATE FIRST CLASS WITH A CERTIFICATE OF DISABILITY ON SEPTEMBER 21, 1945 AT PERCY JONES HOSPITAL CENTER, FORT CUSTER, MICHIGAN. EARNED THE PURPLE HEART MEDAL, COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE, GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN WITH 2 BRONZE BATTLE STARS, AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL.
