ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON JULY 22, 1942 AT SCOTT FIELD, ILLINOIS. SELECTED FOR DUTY WITH THE MEDICAL DEPARTMENT, COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING, AND QUALIFIED IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY OF LITTER BEARER (MOS 657). DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. AND PARTICIPATED IN THE BATTLE OF GUADALCANAL IN THE PACIFIC THEATER OF OPERATIONS. RETURNED TO THE STATES FOR TREATMENT AND CONVALESCENCE DUE TO POOR HEALTH. HONORABLY DISCHARGED WITH A CERTIFICATE OF DISABILITY AS A PRIVATE ON AUGUST 27, 1943 AT BORDEN GENERAL HOSPITAL, CHICKASHA, OKLAHOMA. EARNED THE ASIATIC-PACIFIC CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 1 BRONZE BATTLE STAR AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL.
