IN 1942 THE ARMY SENT HIM TO NEW GUINEA WHERE HE WAS STATIONED FOR MOST OF THE WAR AS A RADIO REPAIRMAN WHERE HE WORKED ON PT BOATS. HE WAS AWARDED A BRONZE STAR FOR HIS WORK IN THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS AFTER SURVIVING A LAND MINE BLAST.
