ON 27 OCTOBER 1943, HE AND ELEVEN OTHER CREWMEMBERS TOOK OFF FROM NEW GUINEA, IN A B-24D LIBERATOR ON A RECONNAISSANCE MISSION OF SHIPPING LANES IN THE BISMARCK SEA. THEY FAILED TO RETURN. HE WAS AWARDED A PURPLE HEART.
