Thirty-year career with the Army and the Judge Advocate General Corps. Served as a member of General Dwight D. Eisenhower's personal staff with the War Department General Staff. His other assignments included serving as the staff judge advocate with the 3rd Army, 6th Army, 18th Airborne Corps and the Chief of the International Law Division for the European Theatre of Operations. An early faculty member of The Judge Advocate General's School when it was founded at the University of Virginia. A World War II combat veteran. Highly decorated soldier. Among his many military awards and honors, he was awarded the Legion of Merit three times, the Bronze Star, the Belgian Order of the Crown, the Netherlands Order of Orange-Nassau and the European Theatre of Operations Ribbons with five Battle Stars. In 1963, Colonel Gray retired from the Army to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he taught at the University of Tennessee School of Law until 1977. Deceased September 6, 1995.
