SERVED ABOARD THE USS BLOCK ISLAND CVE-106 AS A COLONEL, CARRIER DIVISION 27, U.S. MARINE CORPS. HE SUPERVISED BLOCK ISLAND'S PART IN THE RESCUE OF 1,200 PRISONERS OF WAR (UNITED KINGDOM, AUSTRALIAN, U.S.) AT FORMOSA, FOLLOWING THE END OF THE WAR IN SEPTEMBER 1945. HE RECEIVED THE BRONZE STAR AND NAVY CROSS. HE RETIRED AS A LIEUTENANT GENERAL.
