HE ENTERED THE U.S. ARMY AIR CORPS AS AN AVIATION CADET ON JANUARY 16, 1942. HE GRADUATED FROM PILOT TRAINING ON OCTOBER 9, 1942, AS A SECOND LIEUTENANT AND WAS AWARDED THE SILVER WINGS AS A PILOT. HIS FIRST DUTY STATION WAS MACDILL FIELD, FLORIDA, WHERE HE RECEIVED TRAINING IN THE MARTIN B-26 BOMBER. HE WAS ASSIGNED TO THE 386TH BOMB GROUP, 555TH BOMB SQUADRON, ON DECEMBER 1, 1942. HE FLEW HIS AIRPLANE TO ENGLAND IN MAY 1943 AND FLEW 66 COMBAT MISSIONS OVER EUROPE, RETURNING TO THE U.S. IN JULY 1944.
