Activity During WWII

Technician Fifth Grade. Dates of Service: April 22, 1944 - November 30, 1946. Voluntarily enlisted on March 22, 1944 in the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program. Served on inactive reserve duty from April 22, 1944 to January 7, 1945 at the University of Connecticut for study in basic engineering. Attained the age of 18, was put on active duty January 8, 1945 and was sent for basic training. After 7 months of training, left the U.S. on June 13 and disembarked in Okinawa on June 20 to join the 7th Infantry Division, serving with an Intelligence Reconnaissance Platoon as a scout on patrols. A few days after V-J Day, the division moved to Korea to accept the Japanese surrender. On January 19, 1946, General MacArthur restored his formal Guard of Honor, the 31st Infantry Regiment, which was part of the Bataan Defense Force. Assigned to Headquarters Company as a radio operator. The 31st was performing occupation duty at Camp Sobingo, Seoul, facing the Soviet Army across the 38th parallel. Left Korea on September 18, 1946, arriving in the U.S. on October 6 and discharged on November 30 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Awarded: Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Marksman and Expert Infantryman Badge.
