STAFF SERGEANT; ARMY AIR CORPS. B-17 BALL TURRET GUNNER. COMBAT AWARDS: AIR MEDAL WITH AN OAK LEAF CLUSTER, PURPLE HEART WITH AN OAK LEAF CLUSTER, PRISONER OF WAR MEDAL, EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, AND GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL. COMBAT ACTIVITY; ON 8TH COMBAT MISSION, SEPTEMBER 8, 1943, HE SUSTAINED SEVERE FLAK WOUNDS DURING BOMBING RAID OVER LILLE, FRANCE (AWARDED THE PURPLE HEART AND AIR MEDAL). ON 9TH COMBAT MISSION, MARCH 2, 1944, HIS B-17 WAS HIT BY ENEMY FLAK OVER FRANKFURT GERMANY. HE WAS ORDERED TO BAIL OUT OF THE CRIPPLED SHIP, EARNING THE OAK LEAF CLUSTER ONTO HIS AIR MEDAL. HE FRACTURED HIS LEG WHEN HIS PARACHUTE LANDED NEAR KAISERSLAUTERN GERMANY EARNING THE OAK LEAF CLUSTER ONTO HIS PURPLE HEART. CAPTURED BY GERMANS AND THEN HELD AS A PRISONER OF WAR AT STALAG LUFT 4 UNTIL MAY 1945, EARNING THE PRISONER OF WAR MEDAL.
