Served at Saipan, where a Japanese artillery shell exploded near him, leaving 1 leg dangling. After 5 hours, he severed the limb with his own trench knife to save his life. It was 2 hours later before help arrived. Received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, 2 Purple Hearts and 2 Presidential Unit Citations.
