Activity During WWII

HE WAS PRESENT DURING THE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR, BRAVELY MANNING HIS GUN MOUNT AND FIRING AT ENEMY PLANES. HIS SHIP, THE USS HELENA CL-50, A ST LOUIS CLASS LIGHT CRUISER, WAS DAMAGED DURING THE ATTACK, BUT WAS REPAIRED AND PARTICIPATED IN SEVERAL PACIFIC BATTLES BEFORE BEING SUNK DURING THE BATTLE OF KULA GULF. HE SURVIVED, SPENT SOME TIME IN THE WATER BEFORE BEING RESCUED BY HIS SHIP'S CAPTAIN IN A WHALEBOAT.
