PRIVATE FIRST CLASS; Served nine months in the Caribbean area as a gunner on an A-20 Attack Bomber. He was wounded when his plane, while on submarine patrol encountered a U-Boat. He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and a Purple Heart. He was later commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant after completing a course in aerial navigation.
