MEMBER OF CREW OF USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS DE-413 IN THE BATTLE OFF SAMAR, PART OF THE LARGER BATTLE OF LEYTE GULF. THE 'SAMMY B.' FOUGHT VALIANTLY AGAINST SHIPS MANY TIMES HER SIZE BEFORE BEING SUNK IN THE BATTLE. HE MANNED A 20MM ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUN DURING THE BATTLE. FLOATED FOR 50 HOURS AND WAS ONE OF 120 SURVIVORS OF A CREW OF 215.
