SERVED AS A BOTTOM GUNNER ON A THREE MAN CREW AVENGER IN FLORIDA AND HELPED TO TEST NEW RADAR SYSTEMS. DURING ONE OF THEIR FLIGHTS AROUND FLORIDA AND THE CARIBBEAN THEY GOT TOO CLOSE TO A GERMAN SUBMARINE WHICH HAD UPDATED GUNS AND THE PLANE WAS SHOT DOWN. HE WAS HIT ON THE HEAD BY THE RADAR SYSTEM, BECAME UNCONSCIOUS AND WAS RESCUED BY THE PILOT AND OTHER GUNNER. HE DIDN'T WAKE UP UNTIL HE WAS IN A FLORIDA HOSPITAL. HE CONTINUED TO SERVE AS A BOTTOM GUNNER.
