Tail Gunner in a B-17. 23rd Bomber Group, 13th Air Force, Pacific Theatre. Plane crashed in The Pacific after returning to its Guadalcanal base from a mission against a Japanese Airfield in the Solomon Islands. He and 11 other men survived 5 days and 6 nights in two rafts before being rescued.
