Following graduation from high school in Shelton, Iowa he worked for one year in an aircraft factory in San Diego, California, but when Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941, he volunteered for the United States Navy. He went to Navy school in Chicago to become an aircraft mechanic, and then served on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise in the South Pacific. He was discharged in October of 1945.
