He joined the United States Navy on April 16, 1945 and had boot camp at San Diego. He was assigned to Minesweeper YMS-120 at Pearl Harbor where he became a Quartermaster III. His ship later returned to Philadelphia, by way of San Diego and the Panama Canal, to be decommissioned. He was discharged at Camp Shoemaker on July 30, 1946.
