He served in the 35th Infantry corps attached to the 3rd Army. He landed in the D-Day Invasion and continued into France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Germany. He was part of the outfit that tried to secure the town of St. Lo, France. While in the French hedgerow country, he was shot in the knee by a German machine gun ambush for which he received the Purple Heart.
