He entered the Army Air Corps, 9 February 1942, at Fort Douglas, Utah as an Aircraft Power Mechanic. He became an Aircraft Maintenance Technician. His duties included assigning tasks to crews and individual specialists, checking aircraft for unusual malfunctions, running engines and taxiing airplanes. He also interpreted technical orders to subordinates, supervised inspections and did maintenance and repair on aircraft. Among the aircraft he worked on were those that searched and protected the United States from Japanese submarines that were shelling the west coast in 1942. He was later sent to the Jet Experimental Squadron at Santa Maria Army Air Field in Santa Maria, California. He was honorably discharged at March Field, California, 28 November 1945.
