Inducted into the Army on December 10, 1943 in Albany, New York, and in August 1944 he landed with the 3rd Infantry Division on its way across France to the Colmar region where the the 3rd Infantry fought Germans mounted their stiffest resistance. It was there that on January 8, 1945, he destroyed a German machine gun while under heavy fire and captured the last surviving member of the machine gun crew. He received the Silver Star, the third highest medal given by the U.S. armed forces for valor.
