Battle for Okinawa, USS J. William Ditter (DM-31), assault and Occupation of Okinawa Gunto, June 6, 1945. While patrolling on that day, his ship was attacked by a large group of kamikaze. The gun crews downed 5 planes, but another had crashed into the port side near the main deck. He was Awarded the Purple Heart and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with star.
