WAS AGE 14 AT THE BEGINNING OF WWII AND JOINED THE CIVIL AIR PATROL, GROUP I, WING 2 OUT OF CLEVELAND HOPKINS AIRPORT. JOINED THE MERCHANT MARINE AT AGE 15. SERVED ON AN ORE CARRIER ON THE GREAT LAKES AND LATER SERVED ON THE LIBERTY SHIP SS MATHEW MAURY IN THE ATLANTIC FERRYING TROOPS FROM THE UNITED STATES AND GIBRALTAR TO PHILIPPEVILLE, ALGERIA, A STAGING AREA FOR THE INVASION OF ITALY. AT AGE 18 JOINED THE NAVY AND WAS STATIONED IN SHELTON, VIRGINIA. WAS DISCHARGED AS A SEAMAN FIRST CLASS IN 1947.
