He proudly served his country when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces during WWII. He trained as a radio operator and machine gunner and flew numerous combat missions in the South Pacific. He also flew more than 50 missions to deliver supplies and troops over mountainous territory in an unarmed transport plane. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster as well as the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal.
