During WWII, he found his way to Fort Pierce, Florida where he became a member of the Navy's elite and first Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) 13. He was one of the first U.S. military members to set foot on mainland Japan and set explosives proceeding the U.S. invasion of Iwo Jima.
