He became a pilot and was a flight instructor at various military bases in the U.S. from Florida to Indiana. He was eventually deployed to North Africa. He was a pilot of a B-24 aircraft. En-route to Africa he landed in Greenland. While there, during the night, his plane was sabotaged and burned up. His crew that he had trained with was split up and sent with various different crews. He had to wait for a new plane and was given a new crew of men. He flew on to Great Britain and landed on the air strip at the White Cliffs of Dover. He flew on to Africa and then Italy where he flew missions over Germany bombing bridges and factories. He was discharged from the service in 1945 as a 1st Lieutenant.
