Activity During WWII

Enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Rochester, New York on 6 November 1942 at age 19. Upon completion of Basic Training, he was sent to the Air Force Technical School at Lincoln Air Base, Lincoln, Nebraska where he completed the Airplane Mechanics course in April, 1943. Next he completed Airplane Instruments training at Chanute Field, Illinois in June, 1943. Following this, he performed general overhaul and repair on 4 engine aircraft (B-29's and C54's) for 8 months. He was promoted to Corporal in 1943. He then served 24 months as an Instrument Specialist on B-17 Bombers working on electrical instruments, the Perry Gyro Compass and Flight indicator. He also performed installation and repair of the Minneapolis Honeywell Automatic pilot (C-1) on B-17 and B-29 bombers. He was promoted to Sergeant during this time. As a member of the 1503rd Army Air force Base Unit he also served as assistant crew chief on B-29 aircraft. He completed additional training for servicing Pioneer Instrumentation at Bendix Aviation Corporation, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in April, 1945 and the B-29 Instrument Mechanics Factory Course at Boeing Aircraft Factory School, Seattle, Washington in July, 1945. Due to demobilization of the Army Air force, he was discharged from the 1503rd Army Air force Base Unit at Fort Dix, New Jersey on 4 March 1946.
