He was inducted into the United States Army on 19 August 1943 at the Salt Lake City Induction Center. He was to go into pilot training. Received his basic training at Buckley Field, Denver, Colorado. First duty station was the University of Nebraska for pilot training. It was determined that there were too many candidates in the class so he was sent to Santa Anna, California for retesting. He did not make the grade so he chose to be a B-17 mechanic and was assigned to Amarillo Air Base, Amarillo, Texas. He received training as a flight engineer and top turret gunner AT AERIAL Gunner School, Kingman, Arizona. He was transferred to Tampa, Florida for overseas training prior to being assigned for duty in Europe. Before he could be assigned, the war ended in Europe so his class was split and he was sent to gunnery school at Laredo Air Corps base in Laredo, Texas. Before he could be reassigned to the Pacific Theater of Operations, Japan surrendered. He was forwarded to the Separation Center at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas for his release from active duty on 5 March 1946. He received the following awards: American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, AND WWII Victory Ribbon.
