Enlisted in the Navy on 19 February 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a senior in High School and had just turned 18 years old on 24 December 1943. Six weeks of basic training and radio technician school were completed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center before assignment to six months of Aviation Machinist training in Norman, Oklahoma. In November, 1944, his company was shipped to the Naval Air Station in Alameda, California, where HE WAS assigned to the Station's assembly and repair shop for the duration of the war. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on 4 June 1946.
